Pentecost Sunday

Dear parishioners,

Today is the birthday of the church.  We remember, that on the day of the church’s birth, many people from numerous nations were baptized.

Sacred Heart Church has parishioners from numerous nations.  We have people from all over Europe, Africa, Central and South America and throughout Asia.  We are truly a congregation of many languages, but we have one common language which revolves around the love of Jesus Christ.

We are going to be celebrating our heritage this fall when we commemorate the laying of the cornerstone of Sacred Heart Church.  This happened on October 23rd of 1919.  It was a tremendous church event.  Fifty priests were here that day.  Also, it was a very important secular event.  10,000 people stood in the street to hear Cardinal Desire-Joseph Mercier speak.  He was an internationally known World War I hero from Belgium and a friend of Fr. Culemans our founding pastor.

On the speaker’s platform that day was a young military officer named Dwight Eisenhower.  We have a picture of this momentous event with Eisenhower listening to Cardinal Mercier.  All the leading politicians of the area came that day.  Sacred Heart has hosted many other momentous events through the last 100 years.

We will be sharing other information as the commemoration approaches. For now, I would ask you to save the date of Sunday October 20th.

The Holy Spirit was truly at work when Sacred Heart was founded.  May that Spirit continue to guide us as we continue to write the history of our parish.

Blessings,

Fr. Mark
