The Ascension of The Lord
Dear Parishioners,
I am happy to report that we are on track to take possession of the First American State Bank property in the next couple of weeks. This has been a long and complex negotiation for us. This was because the site was contaminated by a gas station that sat across the street and a cleaners that used to sit behind Culemans Hall.
We told the bank representatives that we would only take the building if our parish did not have to clean up any contaminants in the building or on the property. They agreed to this and have paid for testing of the property and removal of the asbestos in the building. The ground contaminants have been found to be within legal limits.
Once we take over the bank, we will tear the building down and use the site for parking. This will make things very convenient for our parishioners. Many of our members are older so this will make things better for them. We also will be able to drop off our school children more safely as well.
We will discuss how we will enhance the site once the bank building is removed. I would hope that this will make our campus more attractive. Our school and church will be clearly seen from 15th Street.
The cost to demolish the building is not to exceed $120,000. The property itself, without the building, is estimated to be worth $150,000 or more.
The finance committee and parish council have agreed that we should move ahead with acquiring the property and removing the building. If anyone would like to donate towards the cost of removing the building it would be most welcome. Just contact me at my office.
I would like to thank the First American State Bank for their decision to deed Sacred Heart the bank property.
Blessings,
Fr. Mark
P.S. Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday last weekend. I thank you for your cards, gifts and good wishes. I am giving myself a birthday gift during this week as I am enjoying an 8-day retreat. I hope to come back to you holier and rested.
