23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners,
During the last few months members of our parish have been meeting once a month to plan for our commemoration of the laying of the cornerstone here at Sacred Heart on October 23, 1919. This was a significant event in the history of our parish, and it was a significant event in the history of Moline. I have been able to read accounts from newspapers about what happened that day and they are very moving. Cardinal Joseph Mercier was the honored guest that day.
Last Wednesday at our meeting we were able to open the copper capsule that contained memorabilia from 100 years ago. In the capsule were numerous newspapers from around the world that reported on the events that would happen at Sacred Heart Moline. Before the internet these newspapers were what everyone read to keep up on what was happening. There were also numerous photos of very important people in the history of the parish and in the history of Moline and all the Quad Cities. Pictures were also included of the numerous early assistants at Sacred Heart.
It was amazing to see what was included in the capsule. All present were in awe of what we were looking at. We hope to do two things with these artifacts:
1. We will have them on display at the celebration on October 20th.
2. We will also add to the box, items that will be from 2019.
We then will put the box back in the cornerstone. Some day it will be broken open again and people will get another chance to enjoy the history of Sacred Heart.
Please mark October 20th on your calendar and turn out that day for the festivities. More information will be available in the weeks ahead.
Blessings,
Fr. Mark
