Homily: Seventh Wednesday of Easter

Seventh Wednesday of Easter (Acts 20:28-38) “Good Leadership”

We have been reading about Paul’s three missionary journeys the last few weeks in the Acts of the Apostles. Paul traveled many miles and his work establishing churches took years. He was concerned that his mission would continue after he was no longer going to be around. He provided strong leadership. He had invested himself completely in his work.

We could ask what the chief attribute is of a good leader. Some would argue that the proof that a leader is excellent is the work that they do continues after they pass off the scene. How well does a leader train the next generation of leaders? If they do this well, then a project will flourish and will continue.

Paul gives final instructions to the presbyters at Ephesus. He warns then that they are going to be on the watch for church members who try to seize power for their own gain. Paul refers to such people as wolves.

There are politics in every organization. Politics are played in the church. Power, money and prestige are things that can be prioritized in any organization. We would hope the church would not be controlled by such things. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

Paul loved the members of the church he founded in Ephesus. He wanted what was best for them. We can sense the affection that parishioners had for him. We know when a pastor has done a good job by how church members react when they find out that pastor will be leaving for another assignment. Paul was beloved by his flock which tells us everything that we need to know about him.

Reflection Questions:

1.    Have I known a good pastor? What qualities made them admirable?

2.   Have I seen leaders pass on their work to others? Was that done successfully?

 Dear Parishioners,

The Sacred Heart reunion is taking place on June 22nd after the 4 p.m. Mass. There will be good food, beverages and a chance to catch up with current parishioners and past parishioners. Mark this on your calendar.

There will also be baskets that people can bid on as well as raffle prizes. Please invite your friends and relatives. The monies raised will be used to retire the debt on the Damien Center.

May Our Lady of Peace pray for us,

            Fr. Mark
