Homily: Tuesday of Holy Week

Tuesday of Holy Week (Isaiah 49:1-6) “Out of the Chaos-New Life.”

During the early part of Holy Week, we read from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah.  The passages we read are called the Song of the Suffering Servant. The prophecy predicts the coming of a leader who would suffer because of his righteousness.  His example of patience in the face of persecution, the prophecy says, will unite people together more than any kind of military victory.  He would die for the sins of humanity.  He would forgive his enemies.

We also read during this week about how the Jesus movement seems to be on the verge of collapse. We read about all the betrayal and intrigue around our Lord. Various apostles claim to be loyal to Jesus but when the going gets tough they run away.  They promise one thing and do another.  We would think that Jesus would be very upset by it all.  If we were in Jesus’ shoes, what would we say?  Jesus in a surprising prediction says, “Now will the Son of Man be glorified.”

We get a sense that out of tumult will come new strength.  Jesus seems to say that the testing will lead to virtue.  Blessings will come at the end of all the upset.

Our lives seem like they are on the verge of collapse right now don’t they. The institutions and organizations we have always relied on seem to be deteriorating. Our government is dysfunctional.  Our church is plagued by scandal and a crisis in leadership. Yet, our faith tells us that something better is coming.  Our hope is in the Lord Jesus who came to redeem the world. He is our suffering servant.  He gives us an example of how to remain faithful even when all seems lost.

During these days of Holy Week, we realize we take heart because our difficulties are minor compared to the Lord. Who died as an expiation for the sins of the world.

Reflection Questions:

1.   What is my biggest concern right now?  How does it compare to those Jesus faced?

2.    Have I ever betrayed Jesus?  Do I feel forgiven?

Dear Parishioners,

Remember that the Easter Triduum begins Thursday night at 7 p.m. with the Mass of the Lord’s supper. Please bring your Rice Bowl donations that night.

On Friday at 3 p.m. we will have the celebration of the Lord’s Passion.  Saturday at 7:30 we will celebrate the Easter Vigil. It would be nice to have many parishioners at all these services. There is no better way to commemorate Holy Week.

May Our Lady of Sorrows pray for us,

        Fr. Mark
