Homily: Feast of St. Cecelia
Feast of St. Cecelia (Lk. 21:5-11) “Pray Twice, Sing”
When I was growing up our parish had a pipe organ. On Sundays Latin hymns were sung by the organist. There was no choir to sing along with her. Eventually, the organist moved to another town and the organ went silent for many years. We had no music at the Masses except on special occasions. I did not know what I was missing until much later.
When I went to the seminary at St. Meinrad in Indiana I was put back in touch with liturgical music. The idea of congregational singing was emphasized. Vatican II said there was to be full active participation by the congregation at Mass.
At the seminary there was more than organ music. We had guitars, percussion, violins, flutes. Many of my seminary brothers were musically inclined. I am gifted in that regard. Every genre of music was used with the liturgy from folk music to Gregorian Chant. We all were able to sing full throated. My spirits were lifted, and I never looked at liturgy the same.
Wherever I have been assigned as a priest we have had good music. I remember my time in campus ministry and the University of Illinois. We had choirs for five of our six Masses. Once again, they were very talented students who engaged in this ministry. The liturgies were lively and inspiring.
On this feast of St. Cecilia, we remember the patron saint of music. We ask for her intercession as we pray for all liturgical ministers in the church. Someone once said that when a liturgy is rousing the music is about 80% responsible. That might seem like an overstatement, but I know as a presider how important music can be. I know I draw energy from having a congregation singing and praising God. I would imagine you do as well.
Reflection Questions:
1. Would I rather go to a Mass that has music or one that does not? Why do I feel that way?
2. Do I sing at Mass? Why or why not?
Dear Parishioners,
During COVID we lost a lot of choir members. Singing in a group was considered one of the most dangerous things to do. Now that COVID is over we are trying to rebuild our choir. If you are interested in singing, we would be glad to have you join our music ministry. Just call Cheryl Bolt at our office and she will try to get you started.
I will only be having a post today and tomorrow this week. On Thursday and Friday, I will take a break for Thanksgiving. My posts will return on Sunday.
May our Lady Peace pray for us,
Fr. Mark
