This Month's Stories

In an effort to help parishioners learn more about the opportunities to get involved at Sacred Heart, we are spotlighting various parish ministries. This month’s Spotlight is on the Prayer Shawl Ministry. We talked to the women of the prayer shawl ministry, and they gave us the following insight to their important work.

The parish Prayer Shawl Ministry hopes through the simple gifting of a shawl that has been blessed to be a source of comfort and blessing to individuals who are facing a difficult time or a trying experience. Each shawl is made from yarn that has been donated or purchased through donations to the ministry. It is carefully knitted or crocheted into an offering of prayerful work meant to wrap someone in reassurance and a feeling of community.

Every shawl created by the ministry is blessed before it is given to its’ recipient. The shawl, and the care with which it was made, are almost like a physical representation of the comfort found in Isaiah 41:10 which states, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Saturday of each month and welcomes anyone who wants to join. There is no need for experience as current members are more than happy to teach this rewarding craft ministry to individuals willing to learn, and the lessons are free!

If you have any questions about this ministry feel free to contact Cecilia Raischel at (309) 736-9529. Visit the prayer shawl ministry page here.
