We Do Not Walk Alone, Jesus is With Us

Dear Parishioners,

We are coming to the end of another year. It has been a tumultuous year in our world. There seems to be so much uncertainty. There does not seem to be much stability on the earth. Wars are taking place all over the globe. Acts of terrorism seem to be the new norm. News commentators even refer to “this week’s” act of terror.

Certainly, the Good News of Jesus Christ is needed more than ever, if we are to build up the Kingdom. That is our task here at Sacred Heart Moline. Sacred Heart has been a Christian Community that has provided support for members for over a hundred years.

At the turn of the 20th century, Belgium immigrants banded together because they believed that there was more security in joining with others than to try to go it alone. We hear a lot about virtual community in our modern times, but from what research has shown such community does little to remedy our feelings of loneliness and isolation. We need face to face encounters. We need brothers and sisters to give us a sense of well-being. Virtual, after all, means “not real.”

God did not choose to stand apart from humanity. No, God came to earth. Our Lord became flesh and blood. He was part of the human family. He experiences our fears, our struggles, our pain, our joy, our death. Because Jesus became like us and did not choose to remain separate we feel we can take all our struggles to him. We are the Body of Christ in the world today, united with each other, a pilgrim people on a journey together.

2018 will be a challenging year for our parish. We continue to implement our strategic plan. We are taking steps to make our church more handicap accessible. We also have hopes that we can have a greater outreach to the wider community. Our school also needs to have upgrades if it is to remain vibrant.

We must dream and plan if the Kingdom of Jesus is to grow in our midst. If we bind together with each other and with Jesus we can do great things. Let’s pray for each other, that we may meet the challenges that lie before us. The message of Christmas is that we do not walk alone, rather, Jesus is with us. Let us trust in Him.

Happy Advent and Merry Christmas,

Fr. Mark DeSutter

Pastor
